The Golden Ratio of Label Removal

Have you ever attempted to peel off labels from a bottle before. The glue leaves residue and makes a huge mess. So when I wanted to give each of my bridesmaids a mini champagne split I went on a mission of find out the best way to take off the labels on bottles. I searched far and wide across the internet and I found things like soaking overnight, placing in a low oven and even the classic goo gone and razor blade. After a lot of trial and error I found the most fool-proof way to get the labels off any wine bottle.

Note: if you are planning to keep and preserve the labels as a memento please do not use this method as they will start to degrade and disintegrate.

Here is what you will need.

• Baking Soda

• Water

• Wine bottles

• Teaspoon measuring spoon

• Container or bowl

Let's get started!

First, mix in the appropriate amount of baking soda to the water mixture and stir to dissolve. The ratio I found that worked well was one teaspoon of baking soda to every 2 cups water.

Once dissolved, place the bottles into the bowl of the solution. Make sure you leave enough room to allow for the water displacement. I didn't and I splashed water all over my countertop!

Let the bottles sit for 10-15 minutes in the water. After time is up take the bottle out and wipe off or peel off the labels. Most of the label should come off after one soak but I did have some pesky bits that wanted to hang around.

Don't fret! Put the bottles back into the mixture for another 5 minutes or so and the glue residue should wipe right off. Then you're all done! The bottles will be free for you to decorate as you please! I added small gold sparkly letters to each of the bottles as a way to personalize them for each of my bridesmaids.

So simple and almost no labor involved and with ingredients that almost everyone has on hand.

Just remember the golden ratio:

1 tsp baking soda : 2 cups water
